How can I access The New York Times via Duke University Libraries?

Answer

Our academic group subscription to The New York Times can only be accessed using SSO.

I've listed different ways patrons can access the platform as new or existing users.

New Users

  •  Accessing the New York Times website:
    1. Navigate to https://www.nytimes.com/
    2. Click on Log In in the upper right corner
    3. Click on "Continue with work or school single sign-on" 
    4. This will prompt the Duke Shibboleth log-in screen.
      1. Use your netid@duke.edu and password to log in.

 

  • Accessing the New York Times app:
    1. Navigate to https://www.nytimes.com/ in your browser 
    2. Follow the same steps above to log in using SSO
    3. Select Account Settings
    4. Select Create under Password
    5. This will send a reset password link to your Duke email
    6. Set your password 
      • Do not use your Duke University password
    7. Download the New York Times app
    8. Click on Log In or Register 
    9. Type in your netid@duke.edu and click Continue
    10. Use the password you created above to log in.

Existing Users

  • Free Account
  1. Log into your account
  2. Click on Account in the top-right corner and then Account Settings
  3. Navigate to Email and settings
  4. Click “Connect” next to Work or School
  5. A pop-up window will open, prompting you to enter your organizational email address.
  6. The window will redirect to Duke's login page for you to authenticate
  7. After logging in through your organization’s authentication system, you will be rerouted to the NYT website
  8. If your NYT account is under a personal email, you will need to change it to your Duke email (netid@duke.edu).
  • Subscribed Account
    1. Log into your account
    2. Click on Account in the top-right corner and then the Subscription Overview section.
    3. Select Cancel your Subscription
      • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​NOTE: Even if you have a partial subscription, for example, a current NYT Games subscriber, you still need to cancel your subscription to use Duke University Libraries' All Access pass since Games is included in the pass.
    4. Please see other methods of canceling your subscription
    5. After your subscription expires, follow the steps under Free Account to connect to the Duke University Libraries' subscription.

Duke users, upon accessing NYTimes digital products, are subject to the NYTimes Privacy Policy and Terms of Service. Each Duke user must have an NYTimes.com account to receive digital access. Use of information shared with NYTimes.com is subject to the NYTimes Privacy Policy.
