Exploring the New EBSCO User Interface
Answer
As Duke University Libraries migrates to the new EBSCO interface, we've compiled some essential and beneficial information about the changes for patrons and librarians.
This section provides a short overview of how EBSCO links have changed.
Link Configuration
- What is OPID?
- It is a new form of EBSCO URL that replaces the old version. The best thing about it is that, unlike the old version, it will function as a permalink.
- It contains persistent information on the institution (Duke University), access nuances (provided by Duke University—Perkins Library), and a specific database at its base. It also stores the database and articles that are accessed when you perform a search.
- On the old EBSCO interface, if you copied a link from the search bar to be used later, it would fail to link back to the article if placed in a new window or browser. To circumvent this, we used to have to copy the permalink on the page. However, with the OPID, you can copy the URL directly.
- Will links redirect?
- Yes. EBSCO will continue to use redirects for the foreseeable future.
- Best Practice: We recommend using the Duke A-Z Database (or the links from your particular professional school database list) for your secondary sites, such as LibGuides and syllabi.

Personal Accounts
- What about patrons' accounts?
- Our patrons do not need to transfer their accounts; their usernames and passwords will remain the same, and EBSCO will migrate them to the new UI.
- Do patrons need to download their folders in the new UI?
- If a patron saved items under the default folder, My Folder, they won't need to take any action. The folder's contents will migrate with their accounts.
- If a patron saved items under the custom folders, My Custom, they must download them from their custom folders in the new UI and replicate their saved content. See steps below.
- How to download items from custom folders? [This option release has been delayed and should be released in May 2025]
- Click Projects under the left-hand navigation bar
- Click the "Get Report" button
- Click the "Download report" button
- This will download an Excel file of the saved items
- What about patrons' saved searches?
- Saved searches also migrated and can be found by clicking on Saved, then the Searches tab.
This section introduces another remote access option we've enabled for our patrons.
