Can licensed e-resources be used for AI training?
Answer
Q: Can licensed e-resources be used for AI training?
Duke students, staff, and faculty are creating AI chatbots for class assignments and research projects. Can licensed e-resource content (journals, ebooks, data etc.) be used to train these AI chatbots?
A: It depends on the individual license agreement
Terms vary from license to license, so it depends on the resource and/or provider. The only way to ensure compliance with our license agreements is to know exactly which platforms and resources will be used for AI training. Please share a list of specific platforms/resources with AskTech staff for further investigation.
Some licenses specify that licensed materials cannot be used to train any AIs unless the material is used in a closed environment where data will not be shared with a third party (DukeGPT is the example we share) and that the AI being trained will only be used for non-commercial purposes.
If you have questions about using e-resources for AI training, please email AskTech (asktech@duke.edu) or submit a question form.
